The Story Behind This Photo of Two Abused Dogs Comforting Each Other Will Move You to Tears
We're pulling for you, Sammie!
All dog lovers know that
our favorite furry friends are an endless source of selfless and loyal
love. And this astounding story about two rescue dogs—Simon and
Sammie—is the perfect example of that innate canine compassion.
In an image shared by Rescue Dogs Rock NYC,
you'll see Simon (right) showing support for a fellow abused
dog, Sammie (left), as he received medical care in New York City,
according to the organization's Facebook page. Simon was comforting
Sammie, who has two broken legs and is in danger of infection. In this
moment, Sammie was fighting for his life.
Before being rescued,
Sammie, a three to four-month-old boxer puppy, was spray painted, shot
in the head, and dragged by a car, resulting in horrific injuries all
over his body, his YouCaring fundraising page
explains. As for Simon, a one-year-old Border Collie mix,
he received medical care for mange, a skin disease covering his body, Today.com reported.
When
these sweet pups first met, Sammie was on an X-ray table. Just nearby,
Simon was let out of his kennel and immediately rushed to Sammie's side
and put his paw on the table, followed by touching his nose to the dog's
paw.
The
pair instantly formed a strong attachment. "The picture really speaks
for itself," Stacey Silverstein, the cofounder of Rescue Dogs Rock
NYC, told Today.com.
"You can see Simon comforting Sammie. It shows that animals have
compassion and they feel. Simon would go to Sammie's kennel to comfort
him and play with him and sit with him often."
Since
the photo was posted, the organization has received a flood of adoption
applications for these two pups. Sammie is still recovering in New York
City, and doctors are hoping they can save his back leg from
amputation. Simon has already found a happy home in New Jersey.
